چکیده

Small-angle ( similar10(-3) rad) scattering of light by ocean water is quantitatively analyzed. The two mechanisms that give rise to such scatterings are suspended biological particles having an index of refraction close to that of water and refractive effects due to large-scale (compared to the laser beam diameter) index of refraction variations. Results of recent experiments performed at the Stanford Research Institute are compared with the present analysis, and reasonable agreement is obtained. Also, the modulation transfer function (MTF) for the scattering mechanisms is derived. It is found that for values of the transverse distances rho less than the size of the large-scale index of refraction fluctuations but larger than the size of the suspended biological particles, the MTF due to the two mechanisms has a different functional dependence on transverse distance. Thus, an experimental determination of the dependence of the MTF on rho will be useful in determining if a dominant scattering mechanism is at play. Also, we conclude that for long propagation paths ( succeeds, similar 10 m), suspended particles can degrade the transverse coherence properties of the laser beam much more than do large-scale refractive index variations.

Point spread function in ocean water: comparison between theory and experiment.

A new instrument to measure the point spread function (PSF) in the ocean has provided the opportunity for direct comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental measurement. Theoretical predictions are derived from small angle scattering theory using a simple algebraic fit to the single scattering phase function. The resulting predictions for the PSF are found to match the experimen...

Application of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues

ABSTRACT Background: Coherent scattering leads to diffraction effects and especially constructive interferences. Theseinterferences carry some information about the molecular structure of the tissue. As breast cancer isthe most widespread cancer in women, this project evaluated the application of small angleX-ray scattering (SAXS) for differentiation between normal and cancerous breast tissues....

Application of the small-angle approximation to ocean water types.

The small-angle approximation to the radiative transport equation is applied to particle suspensions that emulate ocean water. A particle size distribution is constructed from polystyrene and glass spheres with the best available data for particle size distributions in the ocean. A volume scattering function is calculated from the Mie theory for the particles in water and in oil. The refractive...

Light Scattering Properties and Processes of Coastal Waters

Characterizing the volume scattering function (VSF) of oceanic waters remains one of the most outstanding problems in optical oceanography. The goal of this project was to develop the tools necessary to significantly advance our knowledge of the VSF of oceanic waters, particularly coastal waters. This project ended early into this reporting period (FY01) and therefore there is not much new to a...

Entrapment–D-(+)-Glucose Water Nanodroplet: Synthesis and Dynamic Light Scattering

In the present research, the D-(+)-Glucose–confined water nanodroplets with mean size in the range of 6-11 nm were synthesized at D-(+)-Glucose different concentrations by AOT reverse micelles (RMs) method as a function of mass fraction of droplet (MFD) at the constant water-to-surfactant molar ratio ( W=40). The dynamic light scattering of the nano-sized water droplets containing the D-(+)-Glu...
